Release a connector stuck in your vehicle
If the connector won’t come out of your vehicle, it is almost always your vehicle holding it locked, not the charging station. In most cases, this issue can be resolved by locking and unlocking your vehicle following step 1 below.
1. Lock and unlock your vehicle
Section titled “1. Lock and unlock your vehicle”Lock your vehicle with the key fob, unlock it again, and wait about 15 seconds. Then try removing the connector.
This releases the vehicle’s charge-port latch and resolves the large majority of stuck connectors.
2. Release the lock and press the latch
Section titled “2. Release the lock and press the latch”If your vehicle has a charging connector lock, release it. Then press down firmly on the latch on top of the connector handle while withdrawing it — the latch has to be held down for the connector to clear the charge port.
3. Check your vehicle’s own release
Section titled “3. Check your vehicle’s own release”Most EVs have their own way to release the connector:
- A release button or lever near the charge port
- A button inside the cabin, often near the driver’s door or on the centre console
- A “stop charging” or “unlock charge port” control in the vehicle’s touchscreen or companion app
- A manual release cable in the trunk or under the hood, for emergencies
Check your vehicle’s manual if you’re not sure which applies. Tesla drivers can normally stop the session and release the connector from the Tesla app.
4. Open the driver’s door
Section titled “4. Open the driver’s door”On some vehicles, simply opening the driver’s door releases the charge-port latch.
5. End the session first, then unplug
Section titled “5. End the session first, then unplug”If your vehicle is still actively charging, it may keep the connector locked. Stop the session from your vehicle screen or app, wait a few seconds, and try again.
Still stuck?
Section titled “Still stuck?”Call Hypercharge support on 1-888-320-2633 with your station ID. Support can reboot the station remotely, which releases the connector in most remaining cases.
Will I keep being billed?
Section titled “Will I keep being billed?”Possibly — it depends on how the session ends.
At many Hypercharge stations there is no way to stop a session from the app or the station itself; unplugging is what ends it. If you can’t stop the session from your vehicle or the app, billing continues until the connector is removed.
Return the connector to the station’s holster once it’s free — that’s what makes the station available to the next driver.
